Eliran Nargassi is a recent graduate of Shenkar College of Design and Engineering's class of 2012, whose collection "O.M.G." stood out at the institution's talent-filled annual fashion show - not a small achievement. Nargassi's menswear collection caught my attention firstly because it touched on my two favorite trends of summer 2012: transparency and ethnicity. At first glance, his pieces are well-constructed classics with unique twists: unusually placed openings in the fabric, panels of sheer fabric, etc. However, upon learning the story behind his final collection, one only becomes more enticed by these remarkable pieces. Nargassi's collection seems to prove that the angst and seemingly insurmountable frustrations of adolescence, and growing up, can become the beauty of the future - through fashion. Nargassi forces us to wonder - perhaps the raison d'etre of fashion is to translate the moments of our lives into tangible beauty. אלירן נרגסי הוא בוגר טרי של שנקר, אשר הציג קולקציה בולטת ומרשימה בשם "אלוקים אדירים" בתצוגה השנתית מלאת-הכשרון של המוסד - הישג לא קטן. קולקצית בגדי הגברים שלו תפסה את תשומת לבי קודם כל כי היא נגעה בשני הטרנדים המועדפים שלי של קיץ 2012: שקיפות ואתניות. במבט ראשון, הפריטים של נרגסי הם פריטים קלאסיים עם קונסטרוקציה טובה וטוויסטים ייחודיים: פתחים לא-צפויים, חלקים שקופים, וכו'. אבל לאחר ששומעים את הסיפור מאחורי הקולקציה, היא הופכת לאפילו יותר מפתה ומסקרנת. הקולקציה שלו מוכיחה שהתסכולים והחרדות הבלתי מנוצחים של גיל ההתבגרות יכולים להפוך ליופי של העתיד - דרך האופנה. הקולקציה מאלצת אותנו לתהות - אולי תכלית קיומה של אופנה היא לתרגם את רגעי חיינו ליופי מוחשי. אם לא, אז זו לפחות אחת היכולות הפואטיות והמרגשות יותר שלה. הדמעות של היום הן התלבושות של מחר. ♥ הבויפרנד

Where are you from originally?
I was born in Jerusalem but grew up in Ma'ale Adumim.

When did you know that you'd be a fashion designer?
From a very young age. I've always been drawn to aesthetics - even when it comes to cleanliness. Like a lot of people, an early memory of mine is playing with Barbie dolls with my older sister.

How did you choose to design menswear?
Actually, I've designed a lot of womenswear as well. My final project for Shenkar was menswear because it came from a very specific, personal place - I felt that I could best express myself with men's pieces.

How was your final project collection born?
Well, first of all, in my junior year I did a project dealing with self-portraits which went unfinished and I knew that I wanted to return to that place - I felt that when I dove into my own personal expeirence I made my most powerful work. My final collection started with the image of my own childhood kippah, which I un-stitched and documented. Those images represent me as I am today, in terms of my life as a conflict between my Jewish upbringing, belief, homosexulaity and the un-observant way of life I've chosen. My unravelled kippah, a Jewish ritual object with a lot of meaning, represents a believer who is unchained from the rules and boundaries I was taught as a child.

Tell me more about the inner conflicts, which influenced this collection...
I grew up in a religious house. I always tested the boundaries of non-observance in front of my parents - for example, using electricity on the Sabbath. My family's religious way of life worked less and less for me as time went on. Of course, my homosexuality is also a problem for the Jewish religion. I didn't suffer, but growing up and coming into my own wasn't simple. My collection attempts to speak about the major conflicts in my life - between religion and secularism, homosexuality and family tradition, between existence and doubt, between the seen and unseen, like God himself.

How does the collection reflect those subjects?
The truth is that a lot of writers have been quick to mention my homosexuality, but homosexuality wasn't something I tried to convey in the collection - it is more about fashion altering concepts of gender and sex. The clothes in the collection attempt to play with accepted gender symbols, using transparency, layering, skin tones, exposing certain parts of the body (forbidden in Jewish religion). I placed religious representations next to denim, which to me, represents the mainstream. The collection tries to ask questions about masculinity like, "How is that a man in a skirt can look completely masculine?" Many Jews have a tradition of wearing a white button-down shirt for the Sabbath. The white shirt was a powerful image for me. I made a conceptual video to accompany my collection
in which my father dresses me in three white shirts, and then I undress myself. The number three has a lot of symbolism in Judaism and the layered shirts represented a choking effect that religion had on me at one time.

האמת היא שהרבה כתבים כבר ממהרים להזכיר את ההומוסקסואליות שלי, אבל הומוסקסואליות לא היתה משהו שניסיתי להעביר בקולקציה - היא יותר עוסקת באופנה כאמצעי לשינוי תפיסות של מגדר ומין. הבגדים בקולקציה מנסים לשחק עם סמלי מין מקובלים, תוך שימוש בשכבות, שקיפות, צבעי עור, חשיפת חלקים מסוימים של הגוף (האסור על פי הדת). למשל, שמתי רפרנסים דתיים לצד בד דנים, שבעיניי, מייצג את הזרם המיינסטרים. הקולקציה שואלת שאלות על גבריות כמו, "איך זה שגבר בחצאית יכול להיראות גברי לחלוטין?" להרבה יהודים יש מנהג ללבוש חולצה לבנה בשבת. החולצה הלבנה הזאת היתה אובייקט מאד חזק ומשפיע בשבילי. הכנתי וידאו רעיונית ללוות את הקולקציה שלי שבה רואים את אבא שלי מלביש אותי בשלוש חולצות לבנות מכופתרות, ואז אני מפשיט את עצמי. למספר שלוש יש הרבה סמליות ביהדות והחולצות בשכבות מסמלות חנק שהרגשתי פעם בגלל ענייני דעת
Tell me about the hats in your collection...
They are a continuation of the kippah idea. Of course, observant Jews must keep their heads covered at all times, but usually with a kippah and not a hat - a completely western piece of clothing. So, again, you have the tension between religion and modernity. With the hats I tried to create a piece of fashion out of a religious symbol.

And the leg warmers?
When I first started thinking about the collection I collected a lot of images of Hasidic Jews, with the intention of contrasting or combining them with elements from sado-maso culture for the designs. But, I eventually felt that direction was too obvious and extreme - easier to dissect and than my own personal brand of belief. But the leg warmers, which reference the socks that Hasidic Jews wear, are a surviving piece of that initial thought. Also, they reference the knit kippah again, a holy article which belongs on the head - which I've moved to the impure, lower section of the body.

Religion as an inspiration for fashion is a well-worn attempt, whic often winds up looking kitsch and comical. How did you manage to avoid that pitfall?
I conciously didn't use obvious symbols, just hints - not "in your face." The truth is that the focus of the collection wasn't religion, but the space between my life and religion.

Would you say that your collection is Israeli?
Not particularly. Perhaps the easiness and relaxed nature of the pieces is Israeli, like a loose-fit button-down shirt - as opposed to a bow tie, which is definitely not Israeli.

What is the next chapter for you as a recent graduate?
Well, I'd like to remain in Israel, unlike a lot of graduates. I'm working on my website and portfolio now and eventually I'd like to find work at a large company, for the experience. I have no problem doing comercial fashion - that's what Israel has to offer right now.

Who are some of your favorite designers?
I simply worship Hussain Chalayan. I think his story is similar to mine - a Muslim immigrant to western Europe. It's hard for me to explain verbally but I just connect to the simplicity of his designs. I love minimalism - I think it raises a lot more questions than Baroque or Art Deco, for example.
