Did you study design?
Yes. I studied in Shenkar from 2003-2007. Afterwards, I went to intern for PREEN in London. While in London, I was tempted to stay. The internship was an amazing experience; I learned how to work at a fashion label, in a city where fashion is a big part of people's identities. It was a great practical lesson for me.

How do you find Israel different from London in that respect?
Well, in big cities like London, fashion is a means of standing out, making a statement. In Israel ,because it's so small and we all basically know each other, there's less of that need to stand out.

When did you know that you were going to be a shoe designer?
I debated, for quite a while, whether to study men's tailoring or shoe making. For my final project at Shenkar, I finished off the looks for my show [womenswear, strangely enough] with shoes. It was then that the light bulb went off in my head in regards to shoes. I returned to Israel in 2009, from London, with the intention of starting my own entity. There was absolutely no local industry for men's shoes at the time.

Do you design women's shoes?
I design men's and unisex shoes. For the simple reason that I try to separate myself from the crowd. You won't see me doing women's heels, because I think that we have a great selection of women's shoes out there already, some of them designed by friends of mine.

How long has ARAMA been in business? What has it been like?
We showed our first collection in the summer of 2010, so about a year and a half. It's been hectic since then. Last year I displayed my work at
CAPSULE, a show for independent designers in New York. I also displayed at
Style Closet, a New York gathering of bloggers and industry people. I got representation in several countries. One great moment was when my shoes appeared in a work of Israeli video artist
Sigalit Landau. Last October, her people called me said that they'd seen my work. We met. She told me what she needed - some traditional pairs of shoes and some wild ones. She wanted her actors to receive the shoes a few days before she would shoot the work, in order to walk around in them, wear them in, and get them dirty. I loved that idea. It inspired my "dirty look" shoes. I have a small business, basically a one man show. I wake up every morning thinking what I can do today that I haven't done yet.

הוצאנו את התצוגה הראשונה שלנו בקיץ 2010 לפני כשנה וחצי, מאז זה רץ. שנה שעברה הצגתי את הקולקציה שלי בקפסולה, תצוגה למעצבים עצמאיים בניו יורק. בנוסף לכך הצגתי גם בסטייל קלוזט, אסיפה של בלוגרים ותעשיינים בניו-יורק. השגתי נציגות בכמה מדינות. היה לי רגע מרגש במיוחד כשהנעליים שלי הופיעו בוידאו של האומנית סיגלית לנדאו. באוקטובר האחרון, האנשים שלה התקשרו להגיד שהם ראו את העבודות שלי. נפגשנו. סיגלית אמרה לי מה היא צריכה - כמה זוגות נעליים מסורתיות וגם משוגעות יותר. היא רצתה לקבל את הנעליים כמה ימים לפני הצילומים כדי שהשחקנים שלה יוכלו לנעול אותן ושייראו משומשות. מאוד אהבתי את הרעיון. זה נתן לי השראה לעצב נעליים בסגנון "המראה המלוכלך". יש לי עסק קטן, שמבוסס על אדם אחד בעיקרון. אני מתעורר כל בוקר וחושב מה אני יכול ליצור או לעשות היום שעוד לא עשיתי עדיין
What is the level of craftsmanship in Israel, in regards to the production people you depend on?
I think it's at a high level. The problem in Israel is more related to materials, not production. Because I show my work abroad, there is a certain calendar I work with, which also isn't very understood in Israel.

How has the reaction been?
Very good. My client base is expanding. People who buy one pair often come back for another. I like that not just "trendy" people buy my stuff.

טוב מאוד. בסיס הלקוחות שלי מתרחב. אנשים שקנו זוג אחד לרוב יחזרו לקנות עוד. אני אוהב את העובדה שלא רק אנשי "אופנה" קונים את המוצרים שלי
Your shoes are quite a bit more expensive than everything else that's out there. Is there a market for such high-end shoes in Israel?
They are expensive, but they're also different than anything else available. There is a market. You can buy a pair of ARAMA shoes at the beginning of the season, or at the end, when prices go down. There is a price point for everyone.

You just participated in Tel Aviv Fashion Week 2011. Tell me about that.
I co-operated with designer Dorin Frankfurt. They approached me two weeks in advance and asked me contribute my shoes, candy-colored pairs I had just displayed abroad. I was happy to work with them since those models hadn't yet been shown in Israel. I think the shoes and Dorin's clothes worked very well together.

שיתפתי פעולה עם המעצבת דורין פרנקפורט. הם פנו אליי שבועיים לפני תצוגת המסלול וביקשו ממני לתת להם את הדגמים שלי בצבעי סוכריות, דגמים שבדיוק הצגתי בחו"ל. שמחתי לעבוד איתם בגלל שאותם זוגות עוד לא הוצגו בישראל. אני חושב שהשילוב של הנעליים שלי עם הבגדים של דורין היה מוצלח מאוד
Are you fulfilling a dream?
I feel that I'm really at the beginning of a journey. I still have so many things I'd like to achieve: more sales points, more types of shoes, etc..

Do you walk around in your shoes to test them, before they go on sale?
Me or my friends. Yes, we test them.

A pastry/dessert chef. It was a big dream of mine. I may still think up some kind of hybrid project!

Is there a future for independent designer men's shoes in Tel Aviv?
Yes. But, whether good or bad, the serious development of any local brand is when they expand abroad. And my product is quite niche, it doesn't appeal to everyone. I try to always incorporate pieces that I visualize for Israel and others for abroad.

What is the next step for ARAMA?
I'm working on a collection for New York right now. I want to design boots and belts in the near future. Also,
ARAMA is about to take part in
CHANGING ROOM, a fashion exhibition in Barcelona.
