The Boyfriend recently caught up with designer Niran Avisar, whose leather-filled graduate collection caught plenty of attention in Israel's industry and won him an apprenticeship in Italy through the ITS TEN competition. I'm a big fan.

My older brother is also a designer. When we were kids we found ourselves playing pretend “designers.” I worked as a model since age 14, and was exposed to the fashion world. At Shenkar, I started to realize that I had a skill, and wasn’t just pretending. So, maybe after the second semester, I realized I could do this

Inspirations?
Street style. Tel Aviv nightlife. The greyness that envelops the city. I love decay – cracks in buildings. I’m also very inspired by the history of costume – what people wore in different historical periods, including today. For instance – the shirt you’re wearing right now - I love to think, “Why is it the way it is?” and know the history of its parts, how they developed and came to be a part of the shirt

What’s coming up for you?
I’m about to get on a plane to Venice in order to apprentice for the label Diesel Balck Gold. I’m not sure about the details – where I’ll live, the money. The apprenticeship is six months long – but I’d be happy to stay longer and start my career there. I feel like I’m diving into the unknown – it’s a first for me and I have butterflies

Is there a future for menswear in Tel Aviv?
Well, right now the picture is bleak. But, I think there is a new wave of students, in Shenkar as well, doing menswear. The Israeli audience understands it less. For them, there’s casual wear or business attire. That’s it. There’s less of a culture of men wanting good clothes. There’a also a stigma. If a man walks around in Paris very well-dressed, he’s a stylish man. In Israel, even in Tel Aviv, he “must be gay!”

כרגע התמונה עגומה אבל אני צופה שגל חדש של תלמידים, בין היתר בשנקר, מעצבים אופנת גברים. הביקוש של הקהל הישראלי נמוך ולכן ההיצע הוא לבוש יומיומי או חליפות לעסקים. יש מעט מאוד קהל שמתעניין ודורש אופנה גברית עילית. גם קיימת סטיגמה. אם גבר ,לבוש על פי צו האופנה, מתהלך בפריז אז הוא נחשב סטייליסט, אבל בתל אביב יגידו הוא 100% הומו

What were your inspirations for your thesis collection at Shenkar?
I fell in love with Egon Schiele’s portraits, painted at the beginning of the 20th century. I was interested in the Dorian Gray syndrome he went through, it’s written about. I love the idea that something can be beautiful on the outside but ugly within, not as strong as people think. I was also inspired by the dandy or “young gentleman” of the early 20th century. I tried to combine the ideal of a modern man from then and now

Tell me about your relationship with leather?
The final collection was my first experience with leather. I got a big stock as a present. I had already taken a course on shoes. Throw in Egon Schiele and it all gave birth to the leather collection. I like the idea of a “second skin.” No matter how expensive a leather, even some crazy ostrich skin, I’ll try to push its boundaries – or leave it as is. I don’t mind destroying it – no matter how expensive
